Wilson’s continuing commitment to excellence in public schools is paying dividends with higher test scores and numerous schools recognized by the State Board of Education for outstanding performance and progress. The Wilson schools’ top administrator was named North Carolina Superintendent of the Year. Wilson County Schools became only the fourth system in North Carolina and 19th in the nation to earn accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools for meeting national standards for continuous growth toward improving learning for all students. North Carolina’s ABC’s education program, emphasizing accountability and achievement, basics and local control, has been emulated by states throughout the country.

Private and religious schools in our area include Greenfield School, Wilson Christian Academy and Community Christian School. All are well-known for their academics, character education and athletics.

Wilson Community College offers more than 35 curriculum programs ranging from heavy equipment operator to nursing. In addition to offering associate in science degrees the school has a comprehensive college transfer curriculum. Continuing Education includes customized training for business/industry, a Small Business Center and personal enrichment classes. Over 11,000 students enroll at the college annually.

Wilson is also home to Barton College, which received national recognition in 2007 when the Men’s Basketball Team won the NCAA Division II National Championship. Barton College has received top ratings from U.S. News & World Report and PrincetonReview.com. The fully accredited four-year private liberal arts college hasfive academic schools.
